By the late 1850s in Ohio and even earlier in California, a few inventors were experimenting with traction engines--that is, engines which pulled themselves along the ground.  Many of the first attempts at traction involved chain drive.

By the mid eastern half of the United States.  The earliest traction engines were steered by horses.
